WoodyFest is thrilled to welcome Tim Z. Hernandez to the 2017 festival to host a reading and book signing of his book And They Will Call You,a carefully woven narrative about the 1948 plane crash in Los Gatos Canyon, Fresno County, which took the lives of 32 passengers, 28 of whom were “Mexican Nationals” (deportees), a crash made famous the Woody Guthrie in the song “Plane Wreck at Los Gatos (The Deportee Song),” which has been recorded by many musicians, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Dollie Parton, Joan Baez, and Pete Seeger. The national media never reported the names of the dead, who were later buried in a mass unmarked grave. Join Mr. Hernandez as he takes guests through years of research and masterful storytelling, followed by a question and answer session.
Woody Guthrie’s grandaughter and the Senior Operations Manager of Woody Guthrie Publications will present a special screening of Woody Guthrie: Legacy, a 16 minute documentary short directed by John Paulson. This documentary was especially created for the “This Land Is Your Land: The Life & Legacy of Woody Guthrie” exhibit, which toured around the United States from 1998 – 2001. Not available for view anywhere else, this documentary short features Billy Bragg, Wilco, Ani DiFranco, U2, Bob Dylan, and many more special guests. Following the screening, the program will include a presentation of original lyrics by Woody Guthrie.
Therese Crutcher-Marin is the author of Watching Their Dance: Three Sisters, One Genetic Disease, and Marrying into a Family Living At Risk for Huntington’s. Crutcher-Marin graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Masters of Science in Healthcare Administration. Helping others is her passion and she worked twenty years in the healthcare industry, ten of those years in hospice care. Through the years she listened to her patients stories and was compelled to share her powerful, heartfelt love story that challenged, inspired and ultimately lead to her survival. Watching Their Dance: Three Sisters, A Genetic Disease and Marrying into a Family At Risk for Huntington’s, validates her belief that mindfulness, living in the moment, allows us to fully experience our life. 100% of the proceeds from any books purchased will go directly to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
