Songwriting Workshop

From Woody Guthrie’s era to now, artists from across the glove have been inspired by Woody’s art, words, and music, spawning a new generation of young artists encouraged by his social justice themes, simple melodies, and true-to-heart lyrics.

We are thrilled to have the Oklahoma Film + Music Office sponsor the 3rd Annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival Songwriting Workshop, hosted by Ellis Paul! Ellis has performed since the first festival in 1998 during which he was also made an honorary citizen of Okemah.

Ellis Paul’s songwriting workshop will focus attendees on how to better capture great ideas for songs, how to turn a great idea into a three minute journey, and the importance of song editing in engaging the listener in a meaningful, powerful experience..

Ellis has recorded 20 albums, written 1,000 songs and played 5,000 shows in his thirty year career. His songs have been recorded by grammy winning artists and appeared in several blockbuster films. His experience as a touring singer-songwriter coupled with his consistent output as a professional songwriter gives him a broad understanding of the art and commerce of the modern day musician.

Students need only bring a notebook and pen. It is suggested that students be at least 14 years of age.
